School support and shadow teacher

A parent guide to how a shadow teacher and school support can help a child take part in class.

What is a shadow teacher?

A shadow teacher is a trained support person who works with a child inside a regular school or classroom. They help the child follow lessons, manage behaviour and join in with others. The aim is to build independence step by step.

How progress looks

Progress is reviewed regularly with you and the school. Support may change as your child becomes more independent.

At home
Talk about the school day and practise skills from school goals.

At school
Meet with teachers to review goals and plan next steps.

Questions parents ask

  • Yes. A shadow teacher works with the school's permission and in partnership with teachers.

  • Support is meant to be discreet and fade as skills grow. Schools can also foster inclusive classrooms where many children receive help in different ways.

  • Goals are agreed with you, the school and the support team. They are written in small steps, such as joining group time or completing a task with less prompting.

  • That is the aim. As your child manages more on their own, prompting and hours of support are reduced in planned steps with regular review.
