Parent training and counselling
A parent guide to support for you, so you can feel more confident in raising your child.
What is parent training and counselling?
Parent training teaches practical strategies for behaviour, communication and routines at home. Parent counselling gives you space to talk about the stress and feelings that come with caring for a child with extra needs. Both aim to support you as well as your child.

How progress looks
Progress is often seen in calmer routines and more confidence as a parent. Plans are reviewed with you over time.
At home
Use one or two strategies at a time and notice what helps.
With family
Share the approach with other carers so everyone responds the same way.
Questions parents ask
Not always. Some sessions are just for parents. Talk with us about what suits your family.
Yes, when schedules allow. Shared strategies work best when carers hear the same guidance and can ask questions together.
What you share in parent sessions is treated as private, with the usual exceptions if someone is at risk of harm. You can ask your clinician to explain limits at the first visit.
Behaviour change takes repetition and tweaks. Bring honest feedback to sessions so the plan can be adjusted. A slow week does not mean the approach has failed.
