ABA behaviour therapy
A parent guide to applied behaviour analysis and how it can support everyday skills.
What is ABA therapy?
Applied behaviour analysis, or ABA, is an approach that looks at why a behaviour happens and teaches helpful skills in small steps. Therapists use encouragement and repetition, often through play. Plans are built around each child and reviewed over time.

What it involves
Teaching a child ways to ask for what they want, such as words, signs or pictures, in place of crying or grabbing.
Why it matters
When a child can communicate needs, frustration often reduces and they can take part more easily at home and school.
How parents can help
- Share what motivates your child, such as toys, songs or snacks
- Tell the therapist about routines and hard moments at home
- Practise the same words and steps used in sessions
- Praise small efforts as well as successes

How progress looks
Progress is tracked by noting small changes over time. The therapist reviews goals with you and adjusts the plan as your child grows.
At home
Use the same steps and words so learning carries over.
At school
Share goals with teachers so the approach stays consistent.
Questions parents ask
It depends on your child's needs. An assessment or discussion with the team can help you decide.
Yes, in most plans. Parents learn strategies to use between sessions so skills transfer to meals, bedtime and outings. How often you join sessions depends on goals and age.
Goals start from your priorities and from what the therapist observes. They are written in plain language, broken into small steps and reviewed regularly with you.
Often yes. Speech, occupational and behaviour goals can fit together when teams share plans. We aim to avoid conflicting strategies and keep language consistent for your child.
